Pecha Kucha Response

      The presenter had pictures that helped tell her story and what she was trying to get across. She explained each picture and moved on when the picture moved even though she wasn't necessarily done with the slide. She moved and at fast pace and knew what she wanted to say.

      The presenter talked at a fast pace. She didn't have to stop and think about what she wanted to say. She did have quite a few words on some of the slides but not all of the slides had words on them.The pictures helped the story.

     I like the Pecha Kucha. It isn't very long and you don't have to worry about changing the slides. I also like that it isn't your whole presentation. It just helps in the presenting. I fill I can fill the ten slides with pictures that help me to explain my topic.

Only One Child?

I have always been curious about the one child law in China. I have known college students who have come over from China to America to go to school in the U.S. They have tried to explain the law but I am still confused after they are finished explaining. Therefore, I chose to research the one child law.

The law states that each couple can have one child (or two for ethnic minorities and for rural couples whose first child is a girl) (Scutti). If the couple has another child the fine is three to ten times the household’s annual income (Scutti). The fine is called social compensation fee (Scutti). This fee is more for the rich. For the poor it is a flesh and blood tiger (Scutti). The people on farms in the country side need extra hands to work in the fields. Because of the law, they have to pay people to help instead of having lots of children.  According to Chinses officals, the guidelines helped avert 400 million births and in so doing, accelerated modernization (Scutti). But they are making an amendment to the law, allowing couples to have two children if either parent is an only child (formerly, the law permitted two children only if both parents were singletons) (Scutti). In China, 336 million abortions and 222 million sterilizations have been carried out since 1971 (though the one-child policy was introduced in 1979, other, less-stringent family planning policies were in place before it)(Jian).

The law may have helped with the population but may not in the right way. The amount of abortions is too much to handle. 336 million lives have been taken since 1971 and the lives that were taken were little helpless babies that had not been born (Jian). Another problem is when the child gets older it has two sets of grandparents and a set of parents to taken care of all by themselves. This is not a one man job. The new amendment may help with these problems in China but only time will tell.

Harry Potter: Reading Response 4

In the last reading response, Harry had had dentation with Professor Umbridge. She had made him write lines. Hermione and Ron were very concerned with the way in which Professor Umbridge had disciplined Harry. Harry thought it wasn’t a big deal.

                Professor Umbridge is now been placed in a higher place of authority. She is under Professor Dumbledore but is in charge of all the teachers.  The ministry of magic put her in this position. She is called The Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Her job is to make sure that the teachers are only teaching their students what they need to know for their tests called O.W.L.s. All of the professors pass except for one.

                Professor Trelawney is the fortune teller teacher. She is not very good at telling fortunes. Ron and Harry are in her class because it is an easy class and they are very lazy. Professor Trelawney predicts Harry’s death every year he has been in her class. Of course they haven’t come true.

                On the day of Professor Trelawney’s inspection, she is very nervous. Professor Umbridge comes into the class room and asks Trelawney quite a few questions. Her answers are not too bright. Umbridge then lets Trelawney teaching her class. After a few minutes, Umbridge stands up and interrupts the class. She asks Professor Trelawney to make a prediction. Trelawney looks very confused. Professor Umbride says again make a prediction. Professor Trelawney says she can’t. Professor Umbridge writes something done on her clipboard and starts to walk out of the class room. Trelawney tells her to wait and tries to make a prediction. Professor Umbridge is not impressed and leaves the classroom.

                The next day Trelawney is kicked out of Hogwarts. She stands crying in the courtyard. Professor Dumbledore swoops and says, “’You have the right to dismiss my teachers but you do not have the authority to banish them from the grounds. That power remains with the headmaster.’ Umbridge replies with a little smile on her face, ‘For now (Harry potter and the order of the phoenix).’”   

                This part of the book is one of those parts that are a very important for the rest of the book. Dumbledore standing up for his teachers is showing that Dumbledore truly cares. He knows where his authority starts and ends. He lets the ministry cut in as long as he has power. The comment from Umbridge is the most important part. It leads the reader to believe that change is coming and it cannot be good.

I chose this picture because it is a very important scene in the book.

Face to Face/ A Class Divided Response

     The first one I listened to was one by Muhammed El Nasla. He said he cam in to work a couple days after 9-11. Some of his coworkers asked him, "Why his cousins had blown up the world trade centers (face to face)." Another coworker asked him he had any bombs. He was very surprised and hurt by these questions. He didn't understand how people could joke about something that had happened a couple days ago. How can people be so insensitive? This event changed the Untied States forever and they are joking it. Tons of people died and they think it is okay to joke about it.

    Another man named Maher Hathout said that he had friends that were riding on a plane that where Arab or Muslim were asked to not ride the plane by other passengers because of their background or belief. He said, "It is embarrassing and humiliating (face to face)." This was aloud because of the events of 9-11. Even though the events were bad, not all Arabs and Muslims are bad people. They are people just like us. 

   A lady named Anjum Mir says, "Even though the feelings towards the events are rare we  have to go on living. We have to move (face to face)."Life goes on with or without you. You can 't change the past. You can only face the future. 

 
   The children in Ms. Elliot's class were all friends and all liked each other until one day Ms. Elliot told them that blue eyed people are better than brown eyed people. The brown eyed people had to where collars. The blue eyed people were told that they were smarter and could have seconds at lunch. They were allowed more time to play and could use the water fountain. The browned people were not allowed to play with the blue eyed people. Kids who were once nice each other had turned on each other in a matter of minutes. The next day the roles were switched.

   After both days were over the class sat down and talked about how they felt when they were looked down upon because of their eye color. They said they felt stupid and sad. Ms. Elliot had taught them how people who are discriminated against feel. The kids got to experience discrimination and not just talk about it. They had talked about it all year long. Now they really understood what it felt like. They had walked in someone else's shoes for a day.  

Reading Response 3: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

When I last left, Harry had gotten detention with Professor Umbridge the first week of school. He had gotten a whole week.

           

            Harry has not told his friends about the awful detention with Professor Umbridge. Harry is having trouble keeping his opinion to himself. He has again gotten him a week’s detention with the same teacher for the same thing. He has to again crave a line into his skin saying “I most not tell lies (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).”  Even though Harry hasn’t told any lies about the Dark Lord returning.

            The quote, “I must not tell lies (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix),” is a very big part of this book. Harry started being angry because people told him he was lying.  Then the people are telling lies about Harry which fuels his anger even more. The fact that his friends and Dumbledore are ignoring him is just an added bonus. Harry is also starting to have these very intense, weird dreams. He isn’t sure why they are happening every night.  

            Harry has lots of people against him.  For example, Seamus’s mom was seriously thinking about not sending her son back school because the ministry is saying that Harry is telling lies. That seems to be a big theme in this book. That and Harry being extremely angry at everyone.

            I chose the picture below because like I’ve said before Harry feels angry.  In this picture, Harry is telling his God father Sirius that he is very angry. He feels alone and scared. Harry thinks no one will help him. He wants everything to go back to normal.
